“I don’t know what to wear.” (Said every brand client ever.)

You’re not alone—wardrobe stress is one of the most common reasons people delay booking their shoot. You want to look like you, but elevated. You want to feel confident and comfortable, but also aligned with your brand aesthetic. You want to look good… but not like you’re trying too hard.

Sound familiar?

As a Vancouver branding photographer, I help you plan your outfits so you don’t feel overwhelmed—and so your photos reflect the very best version of your brand personality.

Here’s your go-to guide for choosing what to wear, what to avoid, and how to feel amazing in your brand photos.

Start With Your Brand Identity

Before you even open your closet, start with your brand.

Ask yourself:

  • What 3 words describe your brand? (e.g. grounded, modern, bold, playful)
  • What color palette do you use in your visuals?
  • What energy or emotion do you want to convey?
  • How do you want clients to feel when they see you?

If your brand is earthy and calm, your outfits should reflect that. If it’s bold and expressive, bring color or texture. The goal is visual alignment.

How Many Outfits Should I Bring?

Most full-length sessions include 2–3 outfits, which gives you a range of looks for different uses (social, website, launches, etc.).

Entrepreneur wearing neutral-toned outfit during personal brand photo shoot

Here’s a good formula:

  1. Polished + professional – a blazer, jumpsuit, or sleek dress
  2. Casual + relatable – jeans and a knit top, cozy cardigan, or linen blouse
  3. Creative + personality-driven – fun textures, flowy dress, bold color, or accessories

What Colours Work Best in Photos?

Stick to neutral or brand-aligned tones—think ivory, camel, terracotta, olive, soft blush, denim blue, charcoal, or muted jewel tones.

Avoid:

  • Neon colors or overly bright whites (can blow out highlights)
  • Loud patterns that distract from your face
  • Logos or graphic tees (unless they’re part of your brand)

✨ Earthy, soft fabrics like cotton, linen, or knits photograph beautifully and feel comfortable.

Don’t Forget the Details

  • Jewelry: Go simple and intentional—delicate gold hoops or a statement ring
  • Shoes: Yes, they matter! Especially if we’re capturing full-body movement
  • Props: Your favorite mug, laptop, notebook, product, or personal touch
  • Layers: Jackets, hats, scarves, or button-downs give styling flexibility

💡 Tip: Try your full look on a few days before the shoot and take a selfie in natural light!
